How To Win Friends…. And Influence People…. In The Record Collector World

Now some of this may seem like just good common sense…but I have found that people in the collecting world are 99.9% some of the nicest and often most informative people in the world. I have even over the years mentioned I was looking for this or that and someone has either directed me to where to find…kept an eye out for it for me…or in a rare instance or so picked it up for me and either charged me exactly what they paid for the LP or in one case gave it to me.

I am not telling you the following to try and get free stuff off of people…but rather to help you try and find what you are looking for…. while at the same time become a good neighbor in the record collector world.

The first thing I always do whenever I go into a new town or hit a record show or fair…is to either check the internet for the local record stores that sell vinyl and either stop in or call and see what they specialize in or just stop by and say hello to introduce myself. You would be surprised at how much putting a name and face to a hand shake can put you in people’s memory.

Same at a new record show or fair, I actually have some business cards I have printed up that has my name, my email, my cell phone number and what types of vinyl I collect listed on there. But more important than all of that I go up and shake hands and smile. I know it sounds easy enough, but a lot of folks these days just don’t do that. I guess I have my Mother to thank for that. I have made so many good friends that way…and you will find that it is not all about the vinyl but the shared interest and camaraderie. That to me has been an amazing thing with me actually having friends from around the world with many having the same passion for the music I love…Oldies and Jazz if you want to know….and many that have different tastes…but are just good people that I look forward to connecting too or seeing. Now because of this I have been told of shows all over the world and even accompanied to a few when I went out of the country by a local who knew everyone and introduced me///which made even more friends…and I even found a few vinyl gems I had been after for years.

The next thing I do is engage people in conversation. People like to talk about their passions and if you give them a few minutes of your time it may pay off for you as well as win you a friend. I usually carry a little pad of paper and a pen or get a business card from them, that way I can write down what they have an interest in also so that I can be a good neighbor and if I stumble across something that may be of interest to them I let them know. Of course once I get home I put it all on my computer in an Excel sheet under the type of music, name, number and e-mail, but that is just me.

If you’re a bit shy and not the go up too people…there is always the set up a table at the show for a usually reasonable fee and bring some stuff out to sell…that way the people come up to you. I would recommend having some cups and water or soda and an extra chair or two…as that is a great way to meet folks also…and remember get some business cards made up…at $40 for a thousand or so…one good record sale or buy will pay for that.

Now I am also an info nut so if they have a newsletter I sign up…you can’t believe how much I have learner through those, as well as I subscribe to the Record Collector Trades and Magazines (Record Collector News, Record Collector, Goldmine and anything else like that I can find) and even send an email if I have something to offer on a subject.

The other thing I do is sign up online for user groups through Yahoo and also set up a Face book Account to be able to find interesting sites and people and start a network of information and friends there.

From there if I see something someone mentioned. I drop them an email and let them know where and how much it was if I have that info. It is great ways to let people know you are thinking of them and will once again open the door to become that friendly neighbor. Sometimes I will just even post some things I have seen in a store, record show or even on eBay on my Face book page hoping that it will let people know…which has also worked out well. Now I have a lot of people who know me and also out looking for stuff that I am interested in….which is a great reciprocal thing.

The end of the day…..you will get more friends with honey…be a good person….try and help others…don’t be afraid to ask or ask for help finding something..thank them when they try…even if you don’t get what you were after…and always always be willing to smile and give a good strong hand shake…..I guarantee it will do wonders for you…and even if you don’t find that long lost record…you should meet a lot of good people that love collecting just as much as you do.

Tips on record care

How to Fix a Record Player:

  Step 1 Open your turntable according to the instructions in the manual. All turntables can be opened for repairs, but each turntable needs to be opened in a different way. As you open the turntable, check each part you remove for corrosion, broken wires or other damage. Lay out each part carefully on a flat, clean surface.

  Step 2 Replace the needle. Most problems with record players are caused by needles that need to be replaced due to age or abuse. Use a magnifying glass to examine the tone arm and remove the old needle. Seat the new needle properly, and secure it before moving on.

  Step 3 Examine the belt. Many problems in turntables come from a damaged belt. Replace the belt if it looks worn, or is otherwise damaged. Even if the belt is not the source of the problem, many turntables acquired secondhand have never had the belt replaced, and this will prevent future problems.

  Step 4 Inspect the power supply closely. Look for broken wires, missing wires or wires loose in their sockets. Repair any broken wires with the soldering gun, and resolder any loose connections. Plug in the power supply and make sure the parts of the player still function properly before moving on.

  Step 5 Reassemble the turntable, cleaning each part with the cleaning fluid and cloth, or blowing away dust with the compressed air. When your turntable is completely reassembled, play a record on it to ensure that the problem has been solved.

Announcements & New Vinyl Releases

The Clash, the self-titled debut by one of the most influential acts of the 20th century, and the best selling import record of all time, is finally available for the first time as an official U.S. release. With the original British track list, this release was produced from the original masters for Drastic Plastic Records by Sony Records. It has been painstakingly reproduced as a beautiful 180-gram version for collectors and casual listeners alike. In 2003 Mojo referred to The Clash as “the ultimate punk protest album. Searingly evocative of dreary late ‘70s Britain, but still timelessly inspiring.” Need we say more?
